The trek begins in the village of P. Leikul and passes through another village named Tumjang, about an hour into the journey.

It’s worth mentioning that some may casually refer to this trek as the “Tumjang Trek.” However, the primary destination we’re aiming for is Sielkal Peak, standing at approximately 1500 meters.

There’s another peak beyond it, known as Tumjang Peak, the highest in Assam at 1860 meters. Our expedition, however, focuses solely on reaching Mt. Sielkal, allowing more time to explore the other peak.

Your Journey to the Summit (Tumjang)

The journey starts with parking your vehicle at P. Leikul, a spacious village with a motorable road. This village is about 64 kilometers from Haflong and 30 kilometers from Mahur, the nearest railhead.

The initial stretch of the hike in P. Leikul gradually gains altitude through a jungle trail, which lasts for about 50 to 60 minutes until reaching a resting point with a gate that reads “Welcome to Tumjang.”

At this juncture, the trail bifurcates. While one path leads straight to the Tumjang village, we opted for the left turn, which is steeper but shorter, leading toward the Sielkal peak.

A Scenic Ascent

Within 15 minutes, we reached a picturesque, flat area covered with pine trees. From here, Sielkal Peak was already visible, although the final leg of the ascent appeared somewhat steep.

We had already gained considerable altitude, and the ever-moving clouds created a captivating atmosphere, enveloping us above and below.

The Final Push

Final ascent to the peak to Mt. Sielkal Peak (Tumjang)

After capturing the beauty of the surroundings through our lenses, we set out for the final ascent to the peak.

This last section spanned a mere 500 meters but was notably steep, with somewhat undefined steps.

Although it was manageable during our visit, it could pose a significant challenge during the rainy season.

Approximately 15 to 20 minutes later, we triumphantly reached the Sielkal Peak with the entire trek taking less than two hours, accounting for multiple photography breaks. It was one of the easier treks in our adventures.

At the summit, we marveled at the breathtaking views and seized the opportunity to take more photographs.

While a thick mist intermittently shrouded the views below, a sudden breeze cleared it for a glimpse of P. Leikul, the village where our trek had begun.’

In the distance, the Mahur river came into view. This river lends its name to the nearby town of Mahur.

If you’re fortunate, you might even catch a glimpse of passing trains on a clear day, though our visit wasn’t the most suitable for this.

We spent about an hour at the mountain’s top before starting to go down. Going down was harder than going up.

As I said earlier, the last part was steep, and the path was not easy to see, so we had to be careful not to slip. We returned to the village of P. Leikul around 2:30 PM.

In conclution, the trek to Mt. Sielkal Peak in Dima Hasao is a dream come true for nature enthusiasts and trekkers.

With its stunning natural beauty, cultural richness, and manageable challenges, it’s an ideal adventure destination.

As the region develops, more treks and experiences are on the horizon. So, consider Sielkal Peak for your next adventure and explore the wonders of Dima Hasao.
